It was inhabited from the Piceni, as shown by numerous archaeological finds, and, later on, from the Romans. The Middle Age was the period of its greatest splendour. In 1039 the Longobard Longino of Azzone donated the land to the abbey of Farfa and under the administration of Farfa, Offida flourished in terms of socio-economic and became a free city-state. This period was begun working the pillow lace which is still practiced and is matter of great interest. It was a theatre of internal battles between Baroncelli (Guelphs) and Boldrini (Ghibellines). The fight marked the end of the free city-state, which came under the sovereignty of the Church. In 1799 Offida was temporarily occupied from the "insurgents" in revolt against the French occupation and, in 1860, was one of the first centers of the Marche to rise against the Papal State. It gave birth to the Beato Bernardo (1604-1694) and William Allevi (1834-1896), archaeologist, paleontologist, patriot. In recent years, studies and research on grape varieties, winemaking and production techniques, has achieved a quality of wines of great excellence, increasingly, are affirmed in the world of experts and consumers. A new DOC (Controlled Denomination of Origin) wine, named Offida, has recently been approved; it’s got to be added to the former and well- known three DOC wines. DOC Offida has, first, the great merit to rise to the importance they deserve two ancient white grape varieties, Pecorino and Passerina, which previously enjoyed the right consideration and on the other hand, introduced for a red wine an union between< b>Montepulciano and Cabernet Sauvignon. Inside Enoteca, managed by VINEA Association, you can also do wine tastings with the help of experts sommeliers. The most important event remains "of Wine in Wine" (Taken from "OFFIDA TOURIST ROUTE" City of Offida) Festivals and events: - OFFIDA’S CARNIVAL Today, Offida Carnival takes place every year following a precise programme: the official opening is on 17th January, St. Antonio’s Day, while the two Sundays preceding the last week are respectively devoted to friends and relatives; the "Veglionissimi" take place inside the Serpente Aureo Theatre; thursday afternoon devoted to the children’s fancy dress parade inside the theatre; Friday is entirely devoted to “Lu Bov Fint” and the procession of “Li Vlurd”, on Tuesday evening, which closes the carnival.
